[Updated] At least 10 dead after Elmina plane crash

KUALA LUMPUR – At least ten people are dead after a light aircraft crashed near the Elmina area in Shah Alam, this afternoon. It is understood that the incident also involved a motorcycle and car that happened to be at the location. 

A source told Scoop that the aircraft was carrying eight passengers and crew when the incident occurred near a bridge in the township.

Another victim was on a motorcycle and was also killed in the accident.

“We have not yet tallied all the victims, but at least eight passengers and one motorcyclist were killed in the crash. There was also a car involved,” the source said.

Images and footage of the incident have begun making rounds on social media starting 3.10pm today. 

The identity of the victims have yet to be confirmed at press time.

It is learned that the plane was on its way to the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah airport in Subang from Langkawi, Kedah when the incident occurred.

Shah Alam district police chief Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim, who confirmed the incident, said a police team had been sent to the location.

It is learned that the aircraft was a Beechcraft 390, which can carry six to seven passengers and crew.

According to an aviation website, the aircraft is worth between US$1.695 million (RM7.48 million) and US$1.9 million (RM8.79 million).

Another official from an enforcement agency told Scoop at 4pm today that several bodies had been recovered from the scene and that emergency responders were awaiting the arrival of the police forensics team.

An official from the Transport Ministry said the ministry is awaiting an official report on the incident.

According to the flight tracker application, FlightAware Flight Tracker, the Beechcraft Premier 1 twinjet started to descend at 2.31pm at a speed of 498 mph.

At the latitude of 4.55, the jet’s speed continued to descend from 489 mph at 2.32pm to 204 mph 16 minutes later. – August 17, 2023
