KUALA LUMPUR – The unity government aims to develop a policy prohibiting the export of rare earth elements (REE), said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (Tambun-PH).
Anwar, who is also Pakatan Harapan chairman, announced this during the tabling of the 12th Malaysia Plan Mid-Term Review in a special meeting of the Dewan Rakyat today.
“The government will develop a policy to prohibit the export of REE to avoid exploitation and the loss of resources while ensuring maximum return for the country.
“This step will also encourage domestic processing, thus contributing to the nation’s additional revenue.”
REE mining became a hot-button issue during the campaign period for the six state elections in August, especially in Kedah.
Last month, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail claimed that a new case of theft of rare earth elements at an area owned by Kedah Menteri Besar Incorporated (MBI) took place recently.
He added that the newest theft occurred in Bendang Man, Sik, around 10km to 15km from Bukit Enggang Forest Reserve, Sik, the area of the previous REE theft.
Arrests were made, and five sacks filled with REE were seized.
Saifuddin also pointed out that Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, in his capacity as MBI chairman, had to explain how Kedah MBI chief executive officer Muhammad Sobri Osman could issue the approval letter for Jangka Bakat Minerals Sdn Bhd to enter and conduct exploration in the area.
Saifuddin had carried out a series of exposés relating to REE theft in Bukit Enggang, Sik, alleging that the thefts were conducted with the knowledge of Sanusi. – September 11, 2023
