KUALA LUMPUR – The government is allocating RM725.7 million to implement two Flood Mitigation Plan (RTB) projects to solve the persistent flood issue from Pekan Dengkil to Labohan Dagang, Selangor.
The Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change Ministry, in a statement today, said that the projects are expected to protect roughly 120,000 residents in the area from the impact of flood disasters.
“The projects, namely the Sg Langat RTB Project Phase 1 and the Sg Langat RTB Project Phase 2, are both long-term plans of the ministry implemented through the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS).
“These projects are categorised as High Priority Flood Mitigation (TBBT).
“Currently, the RTB Sg Langat Phase 1 is in the process of land acquisition and is expected to be completed in 2027, while the RTB Sg Langat Phase 2 is expected to start in January 2024 and be fully completed by 2030,” the statement read.
As for the short-term measures, the government is increasing the frequency of the maintenance works of the drainage system in the area.
The ministry also added that floods on Jalan Utama Taman Warisan Suria and the FT29/FT32 Intersection since November 5, 2023, were caused by a large amount of silt that had flowed from the development area upstream, causing Sg Kelinsing to overflow.
As such, he said the JPS hopes that relevant developers involved in projects in the area fully comply with the Manual Saliran Mesra Alam (MSMA).
The recent floods have affected several areas in Selangor, including Kg Sungai Buah, Kg Jenderam Hilir, Kg Cemperai, Kg Seri Tanjung, Taman Delima, Kg Orang Asli Sg Melut, Intersection FT29/FT32, and also the Ayamas Sdn Bhd quarters on Jalan Utama Taman Warisan Suria.
As an immediate action to reduce the impact on the residents, the Selangor JPS has placed two units of mobile pumps in Kg Seri Tanjung and Taman Delima to pump water out of the flooded areas. Contractors under the RTB project are also conducting urgent repair works on damaged bunds.
Earlier today, its minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad visited the affected areas in Sungai Langat – Dengkil and Sepang, including the temporary relocation centre in Kg Dato Ahmad Razali Hall, the RTB project site near Kg Chemperaim, as well as a water pump house in Kg Seri Tanjung.
He also handed out donations to the affected victims. – November 11, 2023
