PETALING JAYA – Police are urging Idaman Apartment residents to surrender footage from their vehicles’ dashcams to aid investigations into the murder of 6-year-old Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matiin.

Petaling Jaya police chief Mohd Fakhrudin Abdul Hamid said those with information on the case should share such details with authorities as investigations continue.

“Police have informed residents that their dashboard camera recordings are needed for investigations, and we’re still waiting on residents’ cooperation in the matter.

“We’re sure that they will work with us (as) throughout our investigations, they have given us their full cooperation,” Fakhrudin said during a press conference today near the stream at the apartment complex where Zayn Rayyan’s body was found on Wednesday night.

The apartment area in Damansara Damai consists of 18 blocks housing 2,484 units. Yesterday, police officers tasked at the area were spotted making notes of parked cars with dashcams.

Besides that, Fakhrudin said police are still waiting on a pathologist report to confirm what caused the injuries on Zayn Rayyan’s neck.

“We’re working on building our case based on scientific evidence, as well as information obtained from the crime scene and surrounding environment.

“Discoveries based on the post-mortem cannot be revealed to the public as long as our investigation is still ongoing,” he added, noting that the possibility of a weapon being used on Zayn Rayyan is still being investigated.

Earlier today, it was reported that a forensics team from the Selangor police had conducted checks around the area where the non-verbal autistic child’s body was discovered.

Three canines from Bukit Aman’s K9 Unit were also dispatched to look for new leads that could contribute to the police investigations.

“We’re still gathering any new information that we can get to help our investigations and lead us to a suspect. We will not give up on tracking down a suspect,” Fakhrudin said, adding that police will be continuing their efforts tonight.

Zayn Rayyan’s tragic death is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder after his post-mortem showed that he had suffered injuries on his neck and his body had defensive wounds.

His body was discovered by the river about 100m from his family’s residence at Block R of the apartment complex.

Yesterday, Nor Haizam Hidir, a representative of the apartment complex’s joint management body, confirmed that no CCTVs were installed around the apartment blocks.

Noting that the stream where Zayn Rayyan’s body was found is outside of the management’s jurisdiction, he said that the four installed CCTVs are located at the apartment’s entrance, exit, near the surau and the walkway of Block J.

Bukit Aman’s criminal investigation department director Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain had previously said the child was believed to have been murdered elsewhere before his body was dumped here.

As such, he said police are not excluding the possibility of the killer being someone who is familiar with the area. – December 9, 2023
