Police deputy superintendent charged with teen’s hit-and-run murder

KUALA LUMPUR – Mohd Nazri Abdul Razak, a police deputy superintendent, has been charged with the murder of 17-year-old student Muhammad Zaharif Affendi Muhd Zamrie at the Ipoh magistrates’ court this morning.

The 44-year-old cop did not record a plea to the charge, which is under Section 302 of the Penal Code, Bernama reported. The case will be transferred to the high court.

The charge sheet states that he allegedly crashed his car into the motorcycle Zaharif was on, resulting in the teen’s death at Jalan Taman Jati on Friday, December 15.

The media reports that Nazri, who is with the Kedah police contingent headquarters, was brought to court at 9am today in handcuffs and with his head covered by a piece of cloth.

Nazri is accused of murdering Zaharif near the teen’s school at SMK Jati in Meru, Ipoh, between 12.05pm and 12.40pm last Friday.

The charge under the Penal Code is punishable by death or imprisonment for a minimum of 30 years and a maximum of 40 years, and no less than 12 strokes of the cane.

The presiding magistrate today was S. Punitha, who fixed February 7 for case mention.

The prosecution was led by deputy public prosecutor (DPP) Azlina Rais. Other DPPs on the team are Khairul Azreem Mamat, Wan Azimah Yaakob, Afzainizam Abdul Aziz, Saiful Akmal Mod Said, Nasrul Hadi Abdul Ghani, J.S. Geetha, and Low Qin Hui.

Nazri, meanwhile, was represented by lawyer Jacky Low Yap Loong. – December 18, 2023
