KUALA LUMPUR – The remand order against a former political secretary to a former minister, and a businessman with the “Datuk Seri” title has been extended for three days until January 30.

The remand extension for the two suspects in their 40s was issued by magistrate Ain Nurshahira Sahzan this morning at the magistrates’ court following an application made by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

It was reported that the duo was among four people detained by the agency last week on suspicion of receiving bribes from several companies and contractors that secured tenders in a ministry from 2020 to 2021, amounting to millions of ringgit.

The arrests of the four suspects were made after the main suspect, who previously served as a political secretary to a former minister, allegedly requested and received bribes to ensure that supply tenders in a ministry were awarded to certain contractors, according to sources.

The MACC’s special operations division senior director, Datuk Azmi Kamaruzaman, when contacted confirmed the remand extension against the two individuals who are being investigated under Section 16 of the MACC Act 2009.

The two suspects were previously remanded for four days from January 24 to assist in the investigation, he said.

“Throughout the investigation, the graft busters have seized several luxury vehicles owned by the suspect, including a Rolls Royce Ghost V12 EWB, Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG Brabus, Range Rover Autobiography, Porsche Cayenne, Toyota Land Cruiser, Mini Cooper Works RHD, Toyota Alphard, Toyota Vellfire and Mercedes-Benz S400L,” Azmi said.

It is believed that these vehicles were acquired through corruption by the suspect involved in the tender within the relevant ministry. – January 27, 2024
