[UPDATED] MHC disbands national hockey teams

In major overhaul, governing body president reveals that all coaches' contracts have expired

KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) has disbanded the men’s senior and junior national teams.

MHC president Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal said the national teams will be rebuilt after the 2024 National League ends.

At the same time, Subahan added that all coaches’ contracts had come to an end.

“The players have returned to their (respective) clubs, so at the moment we have no national teams.

“I will leave (the decision-making process) to the coaching committee chairman and its members, who will convene a meeting soon.

“They will decide the mechanics of the selection process for who will helm the national teams.

“After that, they will inform the executive board, which will endorse the candidate recommended by the coaching committee,” Subahan told the media at a press conference at the National Hockey Stadium today.

Meanwhile, there are no changes for the women’s team, with Subahan indicating continuity in their six-year programme.

However, the fate of their coach, Nasihin Ibrahim, remains uncertain.

“We have a six-year programme for them and are not running away from that.

“We are maintaining that team for now but we are unsure if the coach will continue. I will leave that decision to the coaching committee,” added Subahan.

This shocking move could be a way for MHC to reset Malaysian hockey after failing to hit their target at the Junior World Cup last year and missing qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympics. – January 31, 2024
