Photo of the day: PAS supporters’ prayer shadows highlight landmark apex court decision on Kelantan shariah enactment

9:21 PM MYT

THE shadows of PAS supporters, who conducted special prayers outside the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya, cast distinct silhouettes on the tiled flooring. The group had assembled in solidarity with the Kelantan assembly following lawyer Nik Elin Zurina Nik Abdul Rashid’s legal challenge against certain provisions in the state’s shariah enactment.

In a landmark decision today, the Federal Court, with an 8-1 majority ruling, declared 16 provisions in the Kelantan Shariah Criminal Code Enactment 2019 null and void.

Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, leading a panel of nine judges, delivered the historic decision after granting the application by Nik Elin, a Kelantan native, and her daughter Tengku Yasmin Nastasha Abdul Rahman, to contest the constitutionality and legality of 18 provisions in the Kelantan Shariah Criminal Code (1) Enactment 2019. – February 9, 2024
