Nga doesn’t know history: Umno veteran slams Chinese new villages Unesco proposal

Datuk Mustapha Yaakub says 76-year-old villages now modern settlements, first generation have died

KUALA LUMPUR – While rejecting Housing and Local Government Development Minister Nga Kor Ming’s proposal to nominate Chinese new villages or Kg Baru Cina in Selangor as a Unesco World Heritage Site, Umno Veteran Club’s secretary-general, Datuk Mustapha Yaakub, said the former lacks knowledge of history.

He said this is because these 76-year-old villages have transformed into modern settlements, and even the previous generations have died.

“Nga Kor Ming doesn’t know history. The first generation is gone. Their grandchildren’s generation is now residing there. So where is the logic in Nga’s proposal?

Mustapha said this proposal also seemed racist and racially motivated.

“It is also a racist statement motivated by racial politics, or a discordant voice deliberately aiming to cloud racial harmony.”

“The prime minister should be cautious of leaders and ministers like Nga. Not only is he a threat to the unity government, but he also challenges the sovereignty of the Sultan of Selangor,” he said when contacted.

Therefore, Mustapha said that Umno Veterans strongly object to the proposal by Nga and urged the Selangor government not to entertain any requests for negotiation.

Apart from Mustapha, Umno secretary-general Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki also rejected the proposal, citing that it contradicts the Federal Development Policy and could undermine harmony fostered by the unity government.

Nga had previously said that the proposal to nominate Kg Baru Cina in Selangor as a Unesco World Heritage Site was to recognise its cultural and historical importance as these settlements were founded 76 years ago.

He said the matter would be discussed in more detail with the Selangor government. – February 10, 2024
