Taib Mahmud in KL, receiving treatment at private hospital: IGP

Tan Sri Razarudin Husain says investigation paper into 'abduction' sent to prosecutors

KUALA LUMPUR – Former Sarawak governor, Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud, is currently receiving follow-up treatment at a private hospital in Kuala Lumpur.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain confirmed the development when contacted by Scoop today.

Razarudin said the investigation paper on the case of Taib’s “abduction” from a hospital in Kuching, Sarawak, was referred to the state prosecutor’s office yesterday and is awaiting further action.

Razarudin said police have classified the investigation under Section 336 of the Penal Code.

“The concern is not related to the abduction incident, but rather to actions that may have jeopardised the former governor’s health,” Razarudin said.

Razarudin clarified that the term “absconded” in the case, which has been widely reported in the media, did not apply because Taib’s wife accompanied him back home.

“The public is urged not to spread misinformation that could lead to various speculations,” he said.

In a previous statement, Razarudin dismissed the allegation of the former governor being “absconded” from the hospital, asserting that Taib was at his residence during that time.

He requested corrections to the misinformation surrounding Taib’s alleged abduction, explaining that police had received reports, prompting the opening of an investigation.

Rumours had recently spread on social media about Taib’s purported kidnapping from a Sarawak hospital by a family member.

According to earlier reports, a close family member had detached medical equipment from Taib without informing hospital staff late last Saturday night.

Sarawak police commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata said that the social media posts were currently being probed.

In response to the rumours, Taib’s wife, Toh Puan Raghad Kurdi Taib, denied the allegations of forcibly removing her husband from the hospital in Sarawak.

Through an Instagram post, Raghad shared an image of a nurse’s handwritten note regarding his release from the medical facility. – February 10, 2024
