Syed Saddiq joining Perikatan tour not referred to Muda leadership, says sec-gen

Party’s central executive committee never addressed ex-president’s decision, says Amir Hariri Abd Hadi

KUALA LUMPUR – Muda secretary-general Amir Hariri Abd Hadi has distanced the youth-based party from Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) planned nationwide tour after reports on ex-party president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman’s alleged participation in the programme

In a post on social media platform X today, Amir denied Muda’s involvement in the event, asserting that the matter was never addressed by the party’s central executive committee.

“This is not a party decision… it is understood that there is no agreement (for Muda) to join the PN tour.

“It is hoped that parties do not simply issue statements concerning Muda, our MPs, or leaders, ahead of the party’s decision,” he added.

In response to Amir’s clarification, netizens questioned whether action would be taken against Muar MP Syed Saddiq, who is the party’s sole parliamentary representative, for supposedly going against the party’s stance.

Syed Saddiq stepped down as Muda president in November last year after the high court found him guilty of two counts of money laundering, one count of criminal breach of trust and one count of misappropriating Bersatu-linked funds amounting to RM1.12 million.

However, he remains a Muda member, while Puteri Wangsa assemblywoman Amira Aisya Abd Aziz, the party’s only other elected representative, was made acting president.

Earlier today, PN chairman and Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the opposition coalition’s tour to explain current affairs to the public would be joined by Syed Saddiq.

The former prime minister said that while Syed Saddiq was not part of PN, he was a “supporter and ally” of the coalition.

Muda had previously pulled its support from the unity government and joined the opposition bench as a third force, following the party’s protest towards the discontinuation of Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s graft trial. – March 9, 2024
