KUALA LUMPUR – Investigation papers on PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang for saying non-Muslims are the “roots of corruption” in 2022 are still with the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC), the Home Ministry has said.
The ministry, in a parliamentary written reply, said the police’s probe of the Marang MP has been completed.
“(The investigation papers) have been referred to the Attorney-General’s Chambers,” the ministry said in reply to Lim Guan Eng (Bagan-PH), who asked for the status of legal action against Hadi for slandering non-Muslims with that remark.
Hadi’s remarks accusing non-Muslims as the cause of corruption in Malaysia were made on Facebook in 2022.
Police opened investigation papers after numerous reports were lodged against him and took his statement.
It was reported in September 2022 that police were investigating him for incitement and abuse of network facilities.
Earlier this month, Hadi gave his statement to the police over other contentious remarks, this time about the Malay rulers in an article posted on Facebook on February 20, titled “Ketinggian Islam Wajib Dipertahankan (Islam’s supremacy must be defended).”
In it, he called Malaysia’s Federal Constitution a colonial law that was meant to suppress Islam, while also making remarks that allegedly insulted the Malay rulers.
The article led to a rebuke from Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah for disrespecting the constitution and the Malay rulers.
Lim, in his question to the home minister, also asked about action taken against Permatang Puah MP Muhammad Fawwaz Mohamad Jan who gave his statement to police in April last year for making allegedly inflammatory remarks against non-Muslims.
The ministry in its written reply said investigation papers on Fawwaz had been submitted to the Penang prosecutor’s office. – March 28, 2024
