KUALA LUMPUR – Thirteen teenage boys, aged between 16 and 19, have been charged at the Lahad Datu magistrates’ court today with the murder of a 17-year-old male student at a vocational college.

The boys were accused of killing Mohammad Nazmie Aizzat Mohd Narul Azwan at Bilik Asrama 7 Resak and 5 Belian, Lahad Datu Vocational College, between 9pm on March 21 and 7.38am the following day.

No plea was recorded as the case is under the jurisdiction of the high court, reported Bernama.

The closed proceedings were held before magistrate Nur Asyraf Zolhani, with only the families of the accused allowed in the courtroom.

Section 302 of the Penal Code on murder provides for the death penalty upon conviction. However, Section 97 of the Child Act 2001 states that imprisonment would be imposed upon a child offender in lieu of capital punishment.

Only two of the teenagers accused were represented by lawyers Amirul Amin Rashid and Kamarudin Mohmad Chinki. The other eleven were unrepresented.

Case mention is set for May 16 pending the chemist and autopsy reports.

In March, Lahad Datu police chief Rohan Shah Ahmad said two vocational students lost RM50 and RM35, which the victim was accused of stealing.

Police suspect that Nazmie Aizzat was beaten to death as his body bore signs of bruises and injuries. – April 2, 2024
