KUALA LUMPUR – Police have arrested a 21-year-old lorry driver who made a sudden U-turn on the double line and attempted to flee during a roadblock at KM9 Jalan Bahau-Kemayan near Jempol, Negri Sembilan, yesterday afternoon.
Jempol district police chief Hoo Chang Hook said that the suspect’s abrupt actions caused the lorry he was driving to collide with a motorcycle ridden by a 40-year-old man.
He said that upon witnessing the incident, Traffic Investigation and Enforcement division officers and the MPV patrol car from the Jempol district police headquarters pursued the suspect for 50km before apprehending him in an oil palm plantation area in Serting Hilir.
“When being chased, the lorry driver drove dangerously and repeatedly rammed the motorcycle ridden by a traffic policeman into the opposite lane, nearly hitting the officer and other road users.
“In response, the policeman fired 10 shots at the lorry’s tyre to stop the vehicle, but the suspect persisted in fleeing despite the damaged tyre.
“With the assistance of an MPV patrol car, we were able to successfully arrest the suspect in the palm oil plantation area,” he said today.
Hoo said that the suspect was subsequently taken to the Jempol police headquarters for further investigation, where he tested positive for methamphetamine.
The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code, Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
“The remand application for the suspect will be filed at the Seremban court. Police are urging witnesses who were present at the scene to step forward and assist with the investigation,” he said. – April 10, 2024
