KUALA LUMPUR – National men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik is hoping to get as much match practice as possible before the Paris Olympics in June.

Speaking to Shuttle Times in China after their second round win against Kenya Mitsuhashi-Hiroki Okamura of Japan at the Badminton Asia Championships, Aaron and Wooi Yik stressed the importance of getting match practice alongside training.

“The name list for the Thomas Cup is not out yet but we believe we will make the squad as it is important to get as many Olympic points as possible.

“We need to play in tournaments, training without playing competitive matches is not ideal.

“At the very least, we can get the tournament feel before Paris,” said Aaron.

Wooi Yik added that there is still a lot of time before the Olympics rolls around.

“We may head to a few tournaments in preparation for Paris.

“We need to play competitive games and from there we can analyse our mistakes and make corrections for the Olympics,” said Wooi Yik.

In the quarter-finals tomorrow, Aaron and Wooi Yik will play Liu Yuchen-Ou Xuanyi of China.

“Since 2017, we have worked hard and gone through many processes.

“I hope we can get to the semi-final,” said Wooi Yik.

Aaron added that both pairs are familiar with each other’s game, and what is important is the performance on the day. – April 11, 2024
