KUALA LUMPUR – Typically, many athletes in Malaysia balance their sporting pursuits with full-time jobs, demonstrating their ability to manage multiple responsibilities.
The national women’s rugby team, led by Faiz Shamsukhidir, is no exception, successfully bringing together 16 players from various professional backgrounds.
They aim to form a strong team for the upcoming Southeast Asia (SEA) 7s Rugby Championship, scheduled for May 2 in Singapore.
While the majority of the team consists of university students, some members work as teachers, employees in property firms, municipal council officers, and sports officers.
Henrietta David, a seasoned player in the team, also serves as a sports officer for the Sandakan Eagles rugby club in Sabah.
Despite facing challenges, Henrietta takes pride in representing her country in rugby, even if it means making sacrifices such as requesting leave and time off from her employers.
“For me, rugby is not just a physical sport… it’s a life-changing experience. It has taught me the values of responsibility, resilience, and teamwork.
“I will never forget the moment when I helped Malaysia win the bronze medal at the 2017 SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur. It was the highlight of my career… an unforgettable moment for me.
“The last time we competed in the SEA 7s Championship was seven years ago. Although our target is to reach the final, and the preparation time is not long, I believe nothing is impossible if we all work together as a team and give our best,” she said.
In this year’s SEA 7s competition, Malaysia’s women’s rugby squad has drawn in Group A alongside Thailand and Laos, while Group B comprises Singapore, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
They aim to reach the finals not only for the glory of national rugby, but also to enhance their chances of being listed under the Podium Programme, under the supervision of the National Sports Council (NSC).
If they succeed, they may once again be offered contracts as full-time athletes in preparation for next year’s SEA Games in Thailand. – April 21, 2024
