KUALA LUMPUR – A shariah enforcement volunteer was arrested by police on suspicion of outraging the modesty of a woman during an immoral activity patrol at Teluk Mak Nik beach in Kemaman, Terengganu, last Thursday.

Kemaman district police chief Hanyan Ramlan said that the 53-year-old male suspect was arrested last Friday following a police report filed by the victim.

He said that the 24-year-old woman was in the car with her fiance at 7pm at the time of the incident before being approached by the volunteer.

The suspect then ordered the couple to exit their car before seizing the car keys.

He also threatened the couple to take them to the district religious office to take action against them, Hanyan said.

The victim’s partner was ordered to go home separately, while the suspect sent the victim to Taman Perwaja.

The victim was allegedly molested in the suspect’s car during the ride home.

The suspect has been remanded for four days, until tomorrow, to assist in the investigation of the case framed under Section 354 of the Penal Code (for assault or use of criminal force against a person with intent to outrage modesty). – April 21, 2024
