MACC reviewing Mirzan’s request to extend asset declaration deadline again

Source says Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s eldest son submitted one-month extension to comply with notice, after being granted three previous extensions

KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is reviewing several requests submitted by businessman Mirzan Mahathir over the notice for him to declare all movable and immovable assets in his possession.

This comes after his deadline ended on May 15 following three extensions granted by MACC.

A source told Scoop that Mirzan – the eldest son of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad – had submitted several requests to MACC recently for consideration, including another one-month extension to comply with the notice.

“He has made some requests. MACC is reviewing some of the requests involved.”

However, the source did not divulge information about Dr Mahathir’s other son, Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir as MACC extended the deadline for the same notice to May 25.

Mirzan is being investigated under the MACC Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.

MACC started an investigation in August 2022 against all entities linked and named in the Pandora and Panama Papers.

On April 27, Mirzan and Mokhzani in a joint statement wanted MACC to specify which years – out of a period of 43 years – were the most pertinent to the agency’s investigation.

They said such specifics would help them gather the necessary information and documents to declare their assets to the MACC. – May 18, 2024
