KUALA LUMPUR – The presence of several Olympians and former athletes is expected to motivate participants in the “Jom Jalan with NPC 2024” event, which will be held at Padang Merbok here, on Sunday.

Among the stars expected to grace the walk organised by the National Press Club (NPC), are former sprinters Tan Sri Dr M. Jegathesan and Datuk Shahrudin Ali, Malaysia Olympian Association president Noraseela Khalid, and former national walker Mohamed Shahrulhaizy Abdul Rahman.

Federal Territory Kuala Lumpur Athletic Association secretary S. Murugesu has expressed that he hopes the event will grow bigger in the coming years and that more walking events will be held in the city to develop talent in this discipline.

“It’s great to see so many familiar names attending the walk. These were big stars during their time, and they will surely inspire and motivate the other participants.

“What’s even greater is that some former athletes have signed up and will be walking with the other participants.

“This is what sports is about, being sporting and encouraging one another to excel.

“Malaysia used to dominate the race walking scene, and that was made possible through the many race walking events.

“I hope we can continue to produce more stars for the country in the future,” he said in a statement from NPC.

Divided into two main categories, the 10km competitive walk includes men’s, women’s, boys’ and girls’ events, while the 5km fun walk is open to all aged seven and above. – May 31, 2024
