MCMC’s Orang Asli advocacy and outreach programme wins WSIS award in Geneva

Agency takes home award for Building Confidence and Security in the Use of ICTs category which aimed to empower Indigenous communities with technology

KUALA LUMPUR – The advocacy and outreach programme for Kg Orang Asli Negri Sembilan by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has won an award at the 2024 World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) in Geneva, Switzerland.  

MCMC said in a statement today that the project won the Building Confidence and Security in the Use of ICTs category.   

“The award recognises MCMC’s successful initiative to empower the Orang Asli communities in Negri Sembilan by promoting sustainable practices through ICT. 

“The project has significantly increased these communities’ confidence in the safe use of ICT and enabled access to resources and opportunities,” the commission said,

The project also garnered strong public support and was among the most voted in its category, reflecting widespread recognition and appreciation of MCMC’s sustainability efforts, it added.

The recognition does not only highlight the commission’s efforts, MCMC said, but encourages it to continue driving impactful ICT initiatives for underprivileged communities.  

WSIS 2024 was held from May 27 to today, and its awards are given to honour outstanding projects worldwide that leverage the power of information and communication technology to accelerate the achievement of sustainable development goals. – May 31, 2024
