KUALA LUMPUR – A Malaysian semiconductor manufacturer, Jatronics Sdn Bhd, has been slapped with US sanctions for allegedly supplying parts used by Russia in its war on Ukraine.

Al Jazeera reported the sanctions, announced by the US State Department on May 1, against the Kuala Lumpur-based company, quoting a department spokesman saying that Jatronics had supplied components to companies based in Russia, and these companies were in turn supplying Russia’s military-industrial complex.

The announcement on the department’s website states that Jatronics has supplied “Common High Priority List items to companies based in Russia”.

This round of sanctions involves more than 280 companies in different countries that Washington suspects or accuses of supplying Russia’s military efforts against Ukraine.

Common High Priority List items are defined by the US as items that include electronics, mechanical components and tools which are used in the production of Russian weapons.

Placing Jatronics under US sanctions will mean that any of the company’s assets in the US will be frozen, while no one under US jurisdiction can deal with the firm.

An online check found that Jatronics was registered as a company in 2003.

Just last week, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was at the Semicon Southeast Asia trade show, where he launched the National Semiconductor Strategy aimed at attracting RM500 billion in investments under the plan’s first phase. – June 4, 2024
