KUALA LUMPUR – Enforcement on tour buses and their safety standards are on the agenda of a special meeting tomorrow between the tourism and transport ministries, and police, following the recent bus crash at Genting Highlands that killed two Chinese tourists.

Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said other relevant departments, which are investigating the travel agency that arranged the bus charter, will also attend the meeting.

He said the July 2 meeting will discuss maintenance, safety and enforcement measures on tour buses.

“(We are) collaborating with various relevant departments including the Ministry of Transport and the police.

“Currently, all departments are working hard to collect related information, and we expect further updates at the special meeting on July 2, including follow-up actions,” he said on Facebook.

The travel agency that engaged the bus will lose its business licence immediately if violations are found, he added.

On June 29, two Chinese tourists, both males, aged 49 and 58, died in a bus crash as the vehicle carrying a total of 18 tourists made its way down from Genting Highlands.

The bus skidded and hit a road divider at KM16.5 of Jalan Turun Genting Highlands, Pahang.

Yesterday, Bentong police said further investigations into the bus driver, who has been arrested, found that the 32-year old had 27 previous traffic summonses for various offences, including not having a driving licence. – July 1, 2024
