KUALA LUMPUR – The e-hailing driver, who had recently been reported to have dragged out a female passenger from his car on a highway before leaving her stranded, has been charged in court.

In a statement today, Brickfields police chief Ku Mashariman Ku Mahmood said police arrested the driver, a 28-year-old local, after the victim made a police report over the incident.

He said the suspect was charged in the Kuala Lumpur court on June 19 under Section 324 of the Penal Code (voluntarily causing hurt with a dangerous weapon) and fined RM2,000 by the court.

“The incident is believed to have occurred on the Maju Expressway,” said Ku Mashariman.

Section 324 provides for imprisonment of up to 10 years, a fine, whipping, or any two of those punishments.

Scoop previously reported that the victim had booked an inDrive ride from her home to Colony Star, KLCC, and requested that the driver avoid toll roads.

However, the driver allegedly began scolding her upon receiving the request.

This prompted the victim to report the incident through the app’s chat support system.

Although the session ended prematurely and she was unable to provide all necessary details, the driver received a notification from inDrive regarding the complaint.

The driver allegedly stopped in the middle of the highway, assaulted the victim with a steel water bottle, and dragged her out of the vehicle.

In a statement, inDrive said it has taken action against one of its drivers following the assault incident, which has been widely circulated on social media.

It also confirmed that the driver involved in the incident had been permanently banned from its platform. – July 5, 2024
