KUALA LUMPUR – Police are searching for a social league football player who allegedly brought a “kerambit” onto the field during a friendly match at the KLFA Football Centre, Desa Melawati, last night.

A ‘kerambit’ is a small, double-edged knife with a finger ring, resembling a tiger’s claw.

Wangsa Maju district police chief Mohamad Lazim Ismail confirmed that a police report was filed by one of the players from the opposing team at 2.21am, early this morning.

The complainant, a 23-year-old local man, reported that a misunderstanding occurred between the two football teams, during which the “kerambit” was discovered in the suspect’s possession.

“Following the misunderstanding, the complainant stated that the suspect was seen pointing the ‘kerambit’ at the complainant’s teammates.

“So far, no injuries have been reported from the altercation, and we (the police) are actively searching for the suspect to assist with further investigations,” Mohamad Lazim said in a statement today.

The case is being investigated under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Dangerous Weapons Act 1958.

Earlier, footage of the suspect holding a “kerambit” between his fingers on the football field circulated on social media, sparking outrage and mixed reactions from the public.

Local football fans have criticised the suspect, accusing him of overreacting and potentially intending to harm his opponent by brandishing the weapon. – August 5, 2024
