KUALA LUMPUR – Para-powerlifter Bonnie Bunyau Gustin smashed his own world record en route to securing Malaysia’s second gold medal at the 2024 Paris Paralympics today. He also successfully defended his gold in the men’s 72kg category, which he first won at the 2020 delayed Tokyo Paralympics three years ago.

Bonnie, 25, lifted 232kg at the Porte de La Chapelle Arena, to smash his previous best of 231kg, which he set at the World Para Powerlifting Championships in Dubai last year.

Bonnie’s lift also set a new Paralympics record.

China’s Hu Peng (214kg) came in second for the silver, while Italy’s Donato Telesca (213kg) settled for the bronze.

Earlier this week, para shuttler Cheah Liek Hou won Malaysia’s first gold in this year’s Paris campaign, also defending his men’s singles SU5 (standing upper impairment) title at the same venue. – September 6, 2024
