KUCHING — Sabah athlete Elvsius John, who nearly gave up on life after losing his left leg in a road accident 10 years ago, has found new strength in his arms, which have given him a renewed sense of purpose.

Today, Elvsius showcased that strength by sweeping three gold medals and breaking records in all three disciplines he competed in at the Malaysia Para Games (Para Sukma) 2024, held at the Sarawak Stadium.

The 30-year-old secured his third gold by winning the F57 discus throw (for physical disabilities) with a record-breaking distance of 32.18m, surpassing his own previous record of 31.99m set in the 2022 edition.

Elvsius faced strong competition from two Selangor athletes, Muhammad Aizam Balqish Mohd Daniel Dangis (30.32m) and Aliff Shafiq Muhamad, who took silver and bronze, respectively.

Grateful for his success, the Telupid native expressed his disbelief at his continued streak, especially after winning gold in his final event, following victories in the F57 javelin throw on Monday and the F57 shot put yesterday.

“I didn’t expect to break the (Games) record in today’s event as I admit I was not consistent during training, maybe this is a blessing from God,” Elvsius told reporters.

Earlier, he broke the eight-year-old Games record in the F57 javelin throw, previously held by Faridul Masri (27.02m), with a new distance of 27.43m. He also set a new record in the F57 shot put with a 9.31m throw, surpassing Faridul’s 2018 record of 9.22m.

Elvsius dedicated his achievements to his two daughters, Lanie, 2, and Liana, 1.

Reflecting on the difficult times after the accident, when a 10-tonne truck struck the motorcycle he was riding in Telupid, Elvsius shared the emotional struggle he faced.

“For more than a year, I used crutches because I refused to wear a prosthetic leg. I had no motivation and even thought it would be better not to exist, what’s the point if all I do is lie down and do nothing,” he said.

However, with unwavering support from his family, Elvsius realised that sports could change his life. He first participated in a local sports event in Sandakan just to try his luck, but a coach saw his potential, leading him to the success he enjoys today at Para Sukma.

Now, Elvsius dreams of representing Malaysia on the international stage. — September 25, 2024
