KUALA LUMPUR — National mixed doubles player Toh Ee Wei is facing a challenging recovery after requiring 16 stitches from a freak injury at the Akademi Badminton of Malaysia (ABM) gymnasium.
The 24-year-old athlete, who celebrated her birthday last week, sustained the injuries from broken glass while slipping with a dumbbell during her afternoon workout.
Fortunately, the injury affected her left arm, leaving her dominant playing hand unharmed.
“I consider myself lucky that the glass didn’t hit my head or playing hand, as the situation could have been much worse. However, I did suffer a grade two muscle tear in my back,” she said, reported Bernama.
An ABM physiotherapist swiftly took her to the hospital after it was indicated that an ambulance would take some time to arrive.
Currently resting in her hometown of Bachang, Melaka, Ee Wei shared that her parents were so concerned they drove from Melaka immediately after learning about the incident.
“Ee Wei needed several stitches and will not be able to play in the next few tournaments. The important thing is she’s alright, and we expect her to recover in a few weeks,” said coaching director Rexy Mainaky in a statement.
“Her condition is being closely monitored by the medical team, and we will provide updates on her progress in due course.”
Ee Wei and her partner, Chen Tang Jie, were set to compete in the Arctic Open in Finland from October 8-13, but she will now miss the event.
They are also scheduled to participate in the BWF World Tour Super 750 Denmark Open from October 15-20, depending on her recovery, which could take up to two weeks. — September 26, 2024
