KUALA LUMPUR —  Israel has declared Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah dead after launching airstrikes on Lebanon’s capital, Beirut.

The Israel Defence Forces’ official X account announced his death, saying “Hassan Nasrallah will no longer be able to terrorise the world”.

Meanwhile, Israel army spokesman Avichay Adraee was also reported announcing Hassan’s “liquidation” during a strike targeting the Hezbollah headquarters in the southern suburbs of Beirut.

Adraee said the strike also killed several other Hezbollah commanders, including Ali Karki who led the group’s southern front.

Media in the region said Hezbollah has yet to comment on the claims.

The strikes that targeted Hezbollah’s headquarters in a south Beirut neighbourhood were heaviest on Friday evening there and continued into Saturday morning.

Al-Jazeera reported six confirmed deaths and 91 injured from these strikes, according to Lebanon’s health ministry, with the death toll expected to rise.

Israel, however, began pounding Lebanon since early Monday and the death toll since the has gone over 700 people, while about 2,200 are injured, the Lebanese Health Ministry has said.

Hezbollah and Israel have been engaged in cross-border warfare since the start of Israel’s onslaught on the Gaza Strip, which has killed more than 41,500 victims, mostly women and children since Oct 7 last year.

The international community has warned against the strikes on Lebanon, as they raise the spectre of turning the Gaza conflict into a regional war. — September 28, 2024
