TAWAU – A temporary relief centre at Dewan Batu 8 was activated last night to accommodate approximately 200 people after a fire broke out in Kg Jawa, Batu 5. The blaze, which erupted during a power outage caused by a storm, claimed the life of a 5-year-old boy and destroyed 38 houses.

Balung assemblyman Datuk Hamild Awang stated that the relief centre was set up to shelter 48 affected families, with around 200 individuals registered with the Welfare Department.

“Among those registered are 100 males, including nine infants, and 100 females. Of the victims, 178 are Malaysian citizens, while 22 are non-citizens,” he said.

According to Tawau Fire and Rescue Station chief Jemishin Ujin, the fire began at 12.55am and destroyed 38 houses. Tragically, 5-year-old Putra Herriz Azmil lost his life in the incident, with his remains discovered in one of the homes.

Firefighters, however, were able to save 68 nearby houses, and the operation concluded at 5.59am.

Family members revealed that Putra Herriz was initially awakened by his mother as the fire spread. Amidst the panic and rush to evacuate, he was mistakenly thought to be safe, Bernama reported.

His aunt, Noor Hajijah Matrol, 43, shared that her nephew had been asleep when his mother woke him and carried him outside.

“When we realised he was missing, we searched everywhere but couldn’t find him,” she told Bernama. The boy will be laid to rest at Batu 4 Muslim Cemetery once forensic procedures are complete.

Noor Hajijah added that all 13 family members were at home during the incident, some of whom were asleep when the fire started.

Meanwhile, Balung assemblyman Datuk Hamild Awang, who visited the scene, reported that the Welfare Department is updating the number of affected victims.

“As of 2pm today (yesterday), 48 household heads have registered with the department. The fire broke out at 12.45am, and I have been informed that it may have been caused by a candle due to the earlier power disruption.

“I urge the disaster committee to promptly decide on temporary housing for the victims,” he said, adding that the Village Development and Security Committee has been directed to assist with food and other necessities for the affected residents. – October 28, 2024
