VIP convoy chaos: dashcam captures reckless crash, sparks public fury

Netizens demand accountability, stricter laws as a viral video shows a VIP escort vehicle slamming into a Proton Saga, endangering lives

KUALA LUMPUR – A viral video of a car, allegedly part of a VIP security convoy, colliding with a Proton Saga on the North-South Expressway has sparked widespread outrage online.

Netizens have condemned the reckless driving and criticised the entitlement associated with VIP escort culture.

Calls for accountability have flooded social media, with many demanding the VIP involved address the incident and issue an apology.

Critics highlighted that the convoy’s aggressive driving endangered other road users, questioning whether VIPs are afforded undue leeway to flout road safety laws in the name of expediency.

Several users have also urged stricter regulations on VIP convoys, citing their growing notoriety for disruptive and dangerous behaviour.

On X, user @SimpletonED argued that VIP escorts should be reserved exclusively for the nation’s highest office holders, such as the prime minister, deputy prime minister, state menteri besar, and royals.

“The rest are just folks paid with taxpayers’ money,” he added in his post.

User @azmanrocks described the incident as “terrible optics” for the government and questioned whether double standards were at play.

Another user, @KammoSiWong, empathised with the Proton driver, writing: “Why can’t these so-called VIPs follow traffic rules…now the family is without a car.”

Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri confirmed that police are investigating the incident, which occurred in Seremban, Negri Sembilan, Sinar Harian reported.

While he refrained from confirming whether the convoy driver involved was Royal Malaysia Police personnel, he urged anyone with additional information to assist in the investigation.

The incident, captured in a 54-second dashcam video dated November 16 at 2:17 pm, appeared to occur during rainy weather.

The footage shows vehicles on the middle and fast lanes slowing down as supposed police patrol cars approached with sirens and strobe lights activated.

As the convoy weaved through traffic, a black car with flashing lights abruptly accelerated before slamming into the Proton.

The impact caused the Proton’s driver to scream in shock, while a child in the car was heard wailing until the clip ended.

The video also revealed significant damage to the Proton’s rear quarter panel.

A separate screenshot circulating online showed a smartwatch crash alert notification sent to the sister of the woman in the Proton.
