Bergson, Hidalgo could boost Malaysia’s 2027 Asian Cup bid: TMJ

Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim says Bergson could be naturalised for short-term plans and Hidalgo for long-term

KUALA LUMPUR – Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) owner Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim believes his players, Bergson da Silva and Manuel Hidalgo, could strengthen Harimau Malaya if they are naturalised.

Tunku Ismail, who is also the Regent of Johor, said that Bergson, a centre-forward, could be naturalised for the short term, while winger Hidalgo, currently on loan to Sri Pahang FC, could be naturalised for the long term.

For context, Bergson, a Brazilian, has been with JDT since 2021 and is currently 33 years old. Hidalgo, an Argentine, is 25.

Tunku Ismail also expressed confidence in the national team’s ability to tackle the third round of the 2027 Asian Cup Qualifiers under new management, which will be announced soon.

“A system or philosophy that suits the existing players—more compact, attack and defend as a unit. Discipline is key, and God willing, it will be possible.

“Bergson can be naturalised for short-term planning after five years in Malaysia. Hidalgo is also part of the long-term plan, alongside other players. All JDT players are also ready,” he posted on social media account today, referring to the draw for the third round of Asian Cup qualifiers.

At the draw ceremony, Malaysia was placed in Group F, with Vietnam, Nepal, and Laos, giving the national team a chance to qualify for the 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia.

It is understood that the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has granted full authority to Super League clubs to conduct the naturalisation of players for the national team. — December 9, 2024
