KUALA LUMPUR — Kelantan local authorities are investigating a dinner event organised by a mainland China mining company featuring sexily-clad belly dancers held at a vernacular school in Tanah Merah.

Kelantan Local Government, Housing, Health, and Environment committee chairman Hilmi Abdullah told the New Straits Times that the dinner on Saturday was organised by a Chinese company that is working at the Sokor gold mine in the district.

The SJKC a school in the Tanah Merit, is also under investigation for allowing its premises to be used for the event, videos and photos of which have gone viral on social media.

The event goes against state regulations, Hilmi told NST.

“The organisers and the school have violated Section 6 of the Entertainment and Places of Entertainment Control Enactment 1998, which carries the maximum RM20,000 fine or five years’ imprisonment or both,” he was quoted as saying.

Hilmi said that although those attending the dinner event were company staff and miners from China, there were also local Muslim residents employed by the company who were present.

“We regret the organisers’ decision to provide such entertainment and use a school hall to carry out the event,” he added.

Additionally, the organisers had apparently not applied for any permits to hold the event, HIlmi said.

Authorities will be calling event organisers and school representatives to provide statements, he said. – December 23, 2024
