KLANG — Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh is optimistic about the potential leadership of Datuk Mohd Joehari Mohd Ayob as the next president of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM).

She believes Joehari is well-positioned to propel the national squad, Harimau Malaya, to greater heights if elected.

“Datuk Joehari is a board member of Perbadanan Stadium Malaysia under our ministry. If he receives the mandate, it reflects the affiliates’ trust in his ability to lead.

“I am confident he and FAM’s Executive Committee can advance Harimau Malaya to the next level,” Hannah said at the launch of the Under-19 squad for the ICC U-19 T20 World Cup at Bayuemas Cricket Oval today.

The FAM Elections Committee chairman, Prof Datuk Abdullah Mohamad Said, announced yesterday that Joehari is the sole candidate for the presidency after nominations closed on January 16.

Current deputy presidents Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mahadi and Datuk S. Sivasundaram are expected to retain their positions.

Outgoing FAM president Tan Sri Hamidin Mohd Amin, who has held the role since 2018, previously announced he would not seek re-election, signalling a leadership transition for the association.

The election congress for the 2025-2029 term is set for February 15.

Hannah also underscored the importance of maintaining momentum on key projects, such as the National Training Centre (NTC) in Putrajaya, despite the upcoming leadership change. — January 18, 2025
