KUALA LUMPUR – PAS has voiced dissatisfaction over what it sees as an imbalanced leadership hierarchy within Perikatan Nasional (PN), stressing that fairness in the coalition’s leadership structure is more critical than simply appointing a new treasurer-general.
PAS spiritual leader Datuk Hashim Jasin told Scoop that while the party is not concerned about who takes on the treasurer-general role, the broader issue of uneven leadership representation in PN must be addressed.
“So far, we have not heard who will be appointed as PN treasurer-general—perhaps the president knows.
“PAS does not mind who takes up the role, but the leadership structure lacks fairness. The imbalance is obvious, and we want to correct it,” he said.
His remarks come amid growing concerns within PAS over the coalition’s internal power dynamics. Previously, PAS vice-president Datuk Mohd Amar Abdullah acknowledged that the party had yet to discuss a successor for Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, who resigned as treasurer-general in December.
He noted that such appointments were typically decided by PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang.
On December 11 last year, Ahmad Samsuri, who is also the Terengganu Menteri Besar, announced his resignation from the role, citing it as a strategic move to strengthen PN ahead of the next general election. He insisted the decision was not linked to internal disputes.
However, PAS leaders are now openly raising concerns over the coalition’s leadership balance. When asked whether the party had directly addressed the matter with PN chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Hashim said the issue had been conveyed in general terms but should be evident to all coalition partners.
“We have raised this in a general sense, in line with our efforts to ensure fairness and unity in PN,” he said. – February 1, 2025
