Amirudin signals move to federal politics

The Selangor menteri besar is preparing for a move to the federal government by 2028, following an unwritten two-term limit for the state’s top post

KUALA LUMPUR — Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari is preparing for a potential move to the federal government by 2028, following an unwritten two-term limit for the post.

In a recent interview with Sin Chew, Amirudin, who has held the position since the 2018 general election, shared his reflections on his political journey, which began in 2008 when he became a state assemblyman.

He stressed the need for readiness and adaptability in politics, saying, “Politics is full of ups and downs. What’s important is to always be ready and prepared.”

He emphasised that while discussions about leadership changes have subsided for now, the political landscape remains fluid.

However, he cautioned against unnecessary disruptions, stating, “Unless there is a strong reason for a change, sudden leadership shifts could destabilise Selangor and affect its progress.”

Currently, Amirudin is prioritising infrastructure development, flood management, waste disposal, and economic restructuring.

He also addressed speculation about his successor, noting that while Senator and Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz is a possible candidate for the next state election, “the party has many capable leaders, including (PKR) vice presidents Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad and Nurul Izzah Anwar, as well as several executive council members.”

Commenting on the broader political landscape, Amirudin observed that Perikatan Nasional’s momentum peaked during the 2023 state elections.

“They failed to secure wins in subsequent by-elections, except for retaining the Sungai Bakap state seat in Penang. This suggests their wave may have passed,” he said.

Amirudin concluded by warning political leaders against actions that could backfire.

“Those who seek to disrupt stability may end up harming their own positions.” — February 3, 2025
