KUALA LUMPUR – Amid rising concerns over the future of the historic Dewi Sri Pathrakaliamman Temple near Jalan Masjid India, textile retailler Jakel Trading Sdn Bhd (Jakel) has firmly denied any plans for its demolition.
Jakel’s Head of Legal and Corporate Communications, Aiman Dazuki, said discussions spanning over a decade with relevant parties have focused on a harmonious relocation process.
“Since the land was acquired from Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), various negotiations have been held with the temple administration to find the best solution.
“This matter is still under discussion, but I want to emphasise that there is no demolition clause.
“We understand the sensitivities involved, and we also want a win-win situation to safeguard the interests of both parties,” he said at a press conference today.
Regarding the groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for March 27, Jakel clarified that it does not signify the immediate commencement of construction but serves as a symbolic commitment to the project.
Meanwhile, Jakel’s Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Syed Nasrul Fahmi Syed Muhamad, stated that discussions on the matter are ongoing, and DBKL has proposed several locations for the temple’s relocation.
“However, a consensus on the relocation has yet to be reached,” he said.
Earlier, DBKL assured that no demolition activities would take place at the Dewi Sri Pathrakaliamman Temple.
According to Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif, the temple can continue operating as usual until the relocation process is finalised.
She stated that DBKL is committed to ensuring that all measures taken align with the principles of religious freedom as enshrined in the Federal Constitution.
“The relocation process will be conducted transparently and fairly, with discussions involving relevant stakeholders to ensure smooth implementation.
“DBKL also commits to refraining from any demolition activities on the temple structure at its current site,” she said.
The Dewi Sri Pathrakaliamman Temple, located near Jakel Mall in Jalan Masjid India, was built in the late 19th century and now stands amidst the skyscrapers of the area.
It is understood that the land occupied by the temple was sold to a private company that also owns a shopping mall in the same vicinity. – March 20, 2025
