KUALA LUMPUR — All mobile users in Malaysia will receive a minimum of 5GB of free data on the first day of Hari Raya Aidilfitri, the Communications Ministry announced today.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, who is also the government’s spokesperson, said the initiative applies to both prepaid and postpaid users and will be available for at least 24 hours, subject to the terms and conditions set by participating telecommunications providers.

“This initiative by the Communications Ministry, in strategic collaboration with telecommunications service providers, reflects the Madani government’s commitment to prioritising the well-being of the people.

“… (It is) also to strengthen relationships through online communication during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations,” he said at a press conference following a Cabinet meeting today.

Fahmi said the free data initiative is expected to benefit approximately 45 million mobile accounts nationwide.

“This is the first time the ministry is working with telecommunications companies to provide a minimum data quota to all Malaysians,” he said.

Asked about the cost of the incentive, he clarified that it will be fully borne by the participating telecommunications providers.

“No… it is not a subsidy, and the government is not funding it,” he said, adding that there are around 45 million registered telecommunications accounts in Malaysia.

The participating telecommunications providers include CelcomDigi, Maxis, U Mobile, TM Tech, YTL Communications, Pavo Comms, Tune Talk, redONE, REDtone, and XOX.

Further details will be announced by service providers, while the public can access FAQs on the Communications Ministry’s official website at https://www.komunikasi.gov.my/en/awam/faq. – March 26, 2025
