Rocky Bru re-elected as NPC president for final term

KUALA LUMPUR — National Press Club of Malaysia (NPC) president Datuk Ahirudin Attan has retained his position as president after winning it uncontested during the club’s annual general meeting (AGM) last night.

Ahirudin, who is better known as Rocky Bru, announced that this will be his last term leading the nation’s oldest journalism organisation.

Additionally, the elections resulted in the re-election of the club’s deputy president Haresh Deol and vice president Farah Naz Karim.

“This will be my last term, and it is time for the younger journalists to take over. We have good people such as Haresh, Farah, and Sharanjit, to name a few.

“This year, we plan to organise an Asean NPC forum in conjunction with Malaysia’s chairmanship of Asean. The Foreign Affairs Minister, Datuk Seri Mohamad Hassan, is keen on the idea,” Ahirudin said when contacted.

Currently, the NPC has around 200 members, the majority of whom are veteran journalists.

Ahirudin, who also serves as the executive director of Big Boom Media Group, the publisher of Scoop, has been instrumental in the club’s initiatives.

The NPC, established in 1948, has been at the forefront of championing media rights and journalists’ welfare in Malaysia.

The veteran journalist also expressed gratitude to Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail for ensuring that the NPC retains its clubhouse amid ownership concerns.

“Saifuddin gave us the assurance that the clubhouse will continue to belong to the National Press Club for as long as the current government administration is in place,” he said.

The club’s breakthrough in securing a permanent clubhouse came in 1985 when the then prime minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, approved the allocation of a two-storey mock Tudor-style building at 84, Jalan Tangsi, Kuala Lumpur.
