KUALA LUMPUR – Rail operator Prasarana Malaysia Bhd will be installing platform screen doors and possibly sensors for its LRT lines to improve commuter safety, especially for persons with disabilities.

If feasible, Prasarana president and group chief executive officer Mohd Azharuddin Mat Sah said the company is planning to collaborate with the authorities to install sensors on platforms to alert staff when someone steps beyond the designated safety zone.

He added that the number of auxiliary police and operational staff at platforms has been increased, particularly at stations frequently used by persons with disabilities, reported Bernama.

“For the long term, we will begin installing platform screen doors, similar to those at MRT stations,” he was quoted as saying after meeting Rapid KL personnel on duty for Hari Raya Aidilfitri at the Pasar Seni Bus and Rail Hub today.

This comes after the fatal incident involving a visually impaired man who was run over by a train after falling onto the Titiwangsa LRT tracks on February 22.

Meanwhile, the report on the incident has been submitted to the Transport Ministry and the Land Public Transport Agency.

It was prepared by a committee setup to investigate the tragedy and recommend improvements to prevent similar incidents.

Previously, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said Prasarana would be implementing several immediate safety upgrades, including the installation of smart CCTV systems designed to detect risky behaviour at stations.

Initial investigations had suggested the victim lost his balance and fell onto the tracks unnoticed by the train driver. – March 31, 2025
