JPA launches new study loan repayment model based on academic performance

Other than those in medicine, dentistry and pharmacy, students in the pre-service training programme can reduce their repayments if they scored high a CGPA

KUALA LUMPUR — The Public Service Department (JPA) will allow sponsored students in the pre-service training programme (LSP) to convert loans and reduce their repayments based on academic performance under a new sponsorship model.

It will use a student’s Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) to determine the percentage of the loan repayable.

The Convertible Loans Based on Academic Merit model is applicable to all new scholars starting June 1, except for Dermasiswa loan recipients, JPA said in a statement.

The new model replaces the 2016 service placement merit-based Convertible Loan (PBU).

For those with loans under the 2016 PBU, the option to convert loans according to academic performance will be offered in phases starting Jan 1, 2026.

However, the new model will not apply to those in the fields of medicine, dentistry and pharmacy. Students in these fields will get a full loan repayment exception if they complete their studies and fulfil the contract to serve with the government.

JPA also advised students under the 2016 PBU model, who have completed their studies and are currently repaying their loans, to stop making payments starting June 1 until the option to convert is available.

Students can refer to the PSD sponsorship portal at https://penajaan.jpa.gov.my or email [email protected] for any inquiries. – April 28, 2025
