KUALA LUMPUR – Tun Ramli Ngah Talib was sworn in today as the ninth Yang Dipertua Negeri of Penang in a formal ceremony at Dewan Sri Pinang in George Town, succeeding Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak.

The 84-year-old took his oath and signed the official document, witnessed by Penang High Court judge Datuk Rozana Ali Yusoff and State Secretary Datuk Zulkifli Long.

The ceremony was marked by a 17-gun salute, and Ramli was conferred the Darjah Utama Pangkuan Negeri (DUPN), which carries the title Datuk Seri Utama.

In March, Scoop reported that Ramli was the frontrunner to replace Fuzi, who is stepping down after one term on May 1.

On April 24, Ramli received his letter of appointment from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim, and was also conferred the Seri Maharaja Mangku Negara, which carries the title Tun. His term officially begins today.

In his congratulatory speech, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow described Ramli’s appointment as “a great honour for the people of the state,” praising his leadership and character.

“I am confident that under Tun’s leadership and wisdom, Penang will continue to shine, guided by fresh inspiration and spirit towards a brighter, prosperous, and harmonious future,” Chow said.

He further affirmed the state’s unwavering loyalty to Ramli’s leadership, calling for unity with state officials and the people of Penang.

Ramli, who previously served as Perak’s Menteri Besar for 17 years, also held roles as deputy transport minister and Dewan Rakyat speaker. He succeeds Ahmad Fuzi, who has held the position since May 1, 2021. – April 1, 2025
