KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has downplayed speculation surrounding Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli’s leave of absence, saying there is no issue with the matter.
Speaking to reporters after performing Friday prayers at the Bandar Saujana Putra Mosque, Anwar described Rafizi’s leave as routine, saying it was for only a few days.
“Just a few days off, .. no issue at all. I also want to find a few days off,” he quipped, brushing off claims that the Pandan MP’s decision to go on leave was due to dissatisfaction with his party’s election campaign.
The Prime Minister, who also holds the finance portfolio, quipped that he too is hoping for a short break after the 46th Asean Summit later this month.
When asked whether Rafizi’s absence was connected to upcoming internal party matters, Anwar simply responded: “(Rafizi’s leave is only for) a few days. Let him take leave. It’s not an issue.”
The PKR deputy president’s reported extended leave until May 31 has stirred some speculation within party circles, particularly ahead of the nomination process for the 2025 party elections scheduled this weekend.
According to media reports, Anwar had addressed the matter during the Cabinet meeting earlier this week, though no official explanation was provided.
Malaysia is set to host the 46th Asean Summit on May 26 and 27, with leaders from all ten member states expected to gather to discuss regional issues, strengthen economic cooperation, and promote the bloc’s shared values of inclusivity and sustainability.
The summit is part of Malaysia’s role as Asean Chair in 2025. Additional meetings with dialogue partners are expected in October as part of the chairmanship calendar.
This will mark Malaysia’s fifth time helming the regional grouping, having previously held the position in 1977, 1997, 2005, and 2015. The 2025 chairmanship carries the theme of “Inclusivity and Sustainability,” reflecting the region’s collective aspiration to build a resilient and equitable future. – May 2, 2025
