‘Truth will prevail’: Ramasamy to be charged by MACC tomorrow, Urimai claims case is politically driven

Former Penang Deputy CM denies corruption allegations, party vows to fight matter in court

KUALA LUMPUR – Former Penang Deputy Chief Minister II, P. Ramasamy, has confirmed that he will face charges brought by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) tomorrow.

Ramasamy, 76, briefly told Scoop that he had not been informed of the specific charges.

“No details on the charges,” he said.

However, his political outfit Urimai said that he is expected to be charged tomorrow at the Butterworth Sessions Court under Section 23(1) of the MACC Act 2009.

This follows his appearance at the MACC headquarters in Penang on May 12, where he was formally informed of the pending charges.

The case is believed to be linked to the procurement of the Golden Chariot in 2017 and the distribution of welfare assistance through the Penang Hindu Endowments Board (PHEB), which Ramasamy had previously overseen.

These matters have been repeatedly raised by his detractors since 2017 and were earlier referred to the MACC.

In a statement released today, Urimai Interim Council secretary Satees Muniandy claimed the charges are politically driven and timed to coincide with his increasing criticism of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, particularly on issues of nepotism and governance.

“We understand that MACC officers in Penang are acting under instructions from Putrajaya. It is no coincidence that these charges emerge just as Prof. Ramasamy has been openly critical of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim,” Satees said.

The statement further alleged that certain DAP leaders had lobbied the MACC to pursue the case and accused the MADANI government of attempting to silence dissenting voices amid growing disillusionment among Indian voters towards multiracial parties such as PKR and DAP.

“Prof. Ramasamy and Urimai will fight these allegations in a court of law, and we believe the truth will ultimately prevail,” Satees added. “Those in power may attempt to use state institutions to intimidate and suppress critics, but they must remember—power is not permanent.”

Urimai reaffirmed its commitment to continue challenging what it describes as politically motivated intimidation, declaring that neither Ramasamy nor the movement would be silenced. – May 13, 2025
