Money politics in PKR elections? I don’t see it, says Saifuddin

However, he urged party members to immediately report instances of such practices with evidence

GEORGE TOWN – PKR’s former secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has denied deputy president Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli’s claim that money politics is being practised in the ongoing party leadership elections, saying he has not seen any such attempts to woo members’ support.

Saifuddin said the party’s disciplinary committee has yet to receive any complaints related to money politics, as alleged by Rafizi.

“Therefore, Rafizi’s statement remains a personal one,” he told reporters at a press conference held during the 235th Prisons Day celebration at Padang Kota Lama here.

“As a member of PKR’s political bureau, I urge party members to immediately lodge reports if they have evidence of such practices.

“This party was not built on financial might, but on the ideals that inspired public support.”

A party veteran, Saifuddin said the only increase he has observed is in logistical expenses for party elections – reflecting the party’s growth since the late 1990s, when it could only afford to hold events in eateries and homes.

“Even when we organised a party congress back then, it had to be in Chinese schools, because no one else would rent us their facilities.

“Although we now have better logistical capacity, I agree we should not spend lavishly, as society is increasingly sensitive to such matters. I completely reject extravagant feasts at five- or six-star hotels – they are unnecessary,” he added.

Yesterday, Rafizi reportedly said during a campaign event in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, that the party is facing the threat of money politics, describing it as a form of bribery that is hard to prove.

Local media also quoted him as saying PKR and other ruling parties are facing this problem alongside abuse of power.

Rafizi is defending his deputy president post in a straight fight against party vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar in the PKR central leadership elections from May 22 to 24.

No room for tribal politics in PKR

Asked about the contest between Rafizi and Nurul Izzah, Saifuddin extended his best wishes to both, describing them as “the best of the best batch of candidates” and urging members to make wise choices.

He stressed the need for unity and warned against the “us vs them” mentality, which he said could damage the party.

“After the party elections, we need to focus on the Sabah elections. The party must remain in a harmonious state.

“Don’t practise tribal politics – it will destroy the party. PKR has seen this happen before, and it brought chaos,” he added. – May 17, 2025
