MFL draws the line: no finances, no football

Malaysian Football League to enforce strict financial criteria ahead of 2025/26 season as clubs face possible exclusion over monetary troubles

KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Football League (MFL) is set to reassess the financial health of all participating clubs ahead of the 2025/2026 Super League season, amid growing concerns over club instability and potential withdrawals.

Perak FC has already confirmed its exit from the top flight, while Sri Pahang FC is also at risk of pulling out following a failed takeover attempt by Genting Plantations Berhad.

In addition, the Regent of Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, recently stated that Kedah FC may be forced to shut down before the new season begins, although no official confirmation has been made via the club’s social media channels.

Should both Pahang and Kedah withdraw, the Super League would be reduced to just 10 teams.

Speaking to Scoop, MFL acting CEO Shazli Shaik said the league’s First Instance Body (FIB) would release a final list of clubs eligible to compete next season after reviewing each team’s documentation.

“We are on a mission to ensure that this situation does not happen again, as it has been indirectly tarnishing the image of the league.

“This time, we are going to be strict and will evaluate every aspect of a club before they are approved to participate — including their finances, staffing and administration, club licensing, and infrastructure.

“If their documents do not meet our requirements, the clubs will not be allowed to compete in our league.

“We have received all the necessary documents from the clubs, and the FIB will likely make their decision by early next week,” said Shazli when contacted.

Shazli also confirmed that Brunei’s DPMM FC has expressed interest in rejoining the M-League.

The club’s application is currently under review by the FIB to determine its financial and structural readiness.

“There has been an expression of interest, but we are unable to disclose more at this stage.

“The FIB will announce their decision in the coming days or early next week,” he added.

Brunei DPMM FC last featured in the M-League during the 2005/2006 season.

The Borneo-based club also boasts a notable achievement, having won the Malaysia Cup in 1999. — May 17, 2025
