KUALA LUMPUR – Eurodance veteran Dr Alban has made his stance clear on the rising use of artificial intelligence in music composition and performance, calling it “just bulls**t” and vowing never to use it in his work.
Speaking to Scoop at a press conference ahead of his debut Malaysian concert this Friday, the Nigerian-Swedish hitmaker did not mince his words when asked whether he viewed AI as a useful tool or a setback for human creativity.
“I don’t like it. I wouldn’t deal with it. I wouldn’t use it. Everything we do is live vocals. We have a backing track and it is live vocals to the track, nothing else, no AI. It (AI) is just bulls**t,” he said.
Known for hits like It’s My Life and Sing Hallelujah!, Dr Alban, whose career helped define the 90s Eurodance movement, expressed concern that the growing reliance on AI could dilute the authenticity of music performance and creative expression.
“I won’t do it (use AI), and I’m not going to use it,” he added bluntly.
The strong remarks come at a time when the music industry is grappling with the implications of AI-generated content—from songwriting and production to virtual performances and vocal clones.
While some artists and producers have embraced the technology for its speed and convenience, others, like Dr Alban, remain staunch defenders of traditional musicianship.
The 67-year-old artist, who will be performing at Rewind & Play at Zepp Kuala Lumpur on May 23, is known for his energetic live sets and commitment to vocal performance.
He will be joined on stage by backing vocalist Alicia Francke Bocio and DJ and vocalist Dede Lopez.
The event, organised by Mojo Projects and Tuff & Loud, promises a night of pure 90s nostalgia, with Dr Alban performing a full set of his greatest hits—delivered, as he insists, the old-fashioned way: without artificial intelligence. – May 22, 2025
