KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) today signed an agreement with the Defence Ministry (MINDEF) for the development of a long-range air defence radar system for the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF).

The signing ceremony, held during the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2025 (LIMA), saw MCMC Executive Chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din formalise the deal with Defence Ministry Secretary-General Datuk Lokman Hakim Ali.

The event was witnessed by Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

Described as a strategic partnership, the agreement reflects the commitment of both agencies to enhance the country’s defence capabilities through the provision of critical infrastructure based on secure communications technology.

“This agreement symbolises the strategic collaboration between both parties to strengthen the nation’s defence readiness and capabilities by providing critical military infrastructure anchored on communication and security technologies,” the statement read.

It further underlines the government’s continued commitment to national security through collaborative efforts between the public and defence sectors.

Under the initiative, MCMC and the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) will jointly develop the long-range radar system, which aims to significantly boost RMAF’s airspace monitoring and control operations, particularly in the southern region of Peninsular Malaysia.

The system is expected to play a key role in safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty and security.

“This support is aligned with the Whole-of-Government (WoG) approach that prioritises inter-agency synergy to achieve national aspirations,” the statement added.

Also present at the signing were Communications Ministry Secretary-General Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, MCMC Commission Member General (Rtd) Tan Sri Zulkifeli Mohd Zin, RMAF representative Major General Datuk Muhammad Tarminzi Mustapha, as well as senior leadership from both MINDEF and MCMC. – May 23, 2025
