KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia’s Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani have risen to world number one in the latest Badminton World Federation (BWF) men’s doubles rankings, becoming the first Malaysian pair to achieve the feat since Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong in 2016.

The duo, who now hold 91,090 ranking points, edged past Denmark’s Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen (90,411 points) after the Danes failed to defend their Malaysia Masters title last week, Bernama reported.

Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin now join the ranks of Malaysia’s doubles greats, including Razif Sidek-Jalani Sidek, Cheah Soon Kit-Yap Kim Hock, and Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong — all of whom have previously reached the top of the global standings.

The pair began the year in strong fashion by clinching the India Open title in January, though their subsequent form saw them fall short of semi-final appearances in several tournaments.

They will next compete at the Singapore Open from May 27 to June 1, opening their campaign against Taiwan’s Lee Fang Chih and Lee Fang Jen tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Tokyo 2020 bronze medallists Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik remain third in the rankings, while newly crowned Malaysia Masters champions Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun move up one place to seventh. — May 27, 2025
