KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia and Indonesia are looking to deepen bilateral cooperation in communications, media, and digital infrastructure, following a meeting between Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil and his Indonesian counterpart Meutya Viada Hafid in Tokyo.
Fahmi described the meeting as “very positive and cordial”, noting that discussions touched on a range of strategic areas to strengthen regional collaboration between both countries.
“Among the key matters agreed upon was the strengthening of strategic cooperation between Bernama and Antara,” he said in a statement today.
This includes cross-border coverage, content exchange, and shared training and professional development.
“This is important to ensure both agencies remain credible and relevant in delivering accurate and balanced information to the public,” he added.
The ministers also underscored the role of the Malaysia-Indonesia Journalists Friendship Alliance (Iswami) in fostering closer ties between the two nations’ media industries.
Fahmi said Iswami served not only to connect professional journalists but also to promote greater understanding between Malaysians and Indonesians through more inclusive storytelling.
“Guided by a strong spirit of neighbourliness and shared values, we believe Malaysia and Indonesia can continue to expand cooperation in the communications sector for the benefit of both peoples,” he said.
The meeting was the first between the two ministers after several earlier attempts were postponed.
Fahmi is in Tokyo to attend the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity Ministerial Meeting (APT-MM) 2025, themed “Harnessing Emerging Technologies for Sustainable, Inclusive and Equitable Digital Transformation in the Asia-Pacific”, which began yesterday.
The meeting brings together 31 member countries and 19 affiliates comprising governments, regulators and private agencies from the Asia-Pacific region. – May 31, 2025
