KUALA LUMPUR – About RM20 million from sukuk funds intended for highway construction may have been misappropriated and used for gambling activities, in a case involving a highway concessionaire with the title “Tan Sri”, said Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki.
Recent investigation results found that the Tan Sri has several investments also suspected of being linked to illicit activities.
According to Azam, the commission is tracing assets believed to have been acquired through the misappropriated sukuk funds, including those held abroad.
“So far, statements have been recorded from 45 witnesses, and we are still waiting to interview the Tan Sri, who is currently understood to be receiving treatment at a private hospital,” Azam was reported as saying by BH.
A recent raid on the Tan Sri’s luxury residence uncovered a liquor storage room stocked with high-end alcohol and fitted with a private bar.
It was also reported that six high-end homes and a plot of land worth around RM12 million were seized. The MACC additionally found several horses, each worth hundreds of thousands of ringgit, allegedly bought using the misappropriated funds.
The seized assets and frozen bank accounts are reported to be worth an estimated RM85.6 million, which includes 14 individual bank accounts totalling RM4.5 million and eight company accounts amounting to RM33 million.
Other items confiscated were luxury vehicles (RM7.65 million), designer handbags (RM3 million), jewellery (RM6 million), and high-end watches (estimated at RM7 million). – June 2, 2025
